Beswick crowned 2024 Australian Formula Ford Series Champion Sunday at Phillip Island

Following a nail-biting run into Sunday’s racing, Eddie Beswick (#30 Synergy Motorsport Spectrum) has wrapped up the 2024 Australian Formula Ford Series after Race 2 Sunday at Phillip Island. Joining him on the championship podium steps were Kobi Williams (#94 ACMF Finance Spectrum) in second and Jack Bussey (#74 Ag Equip Spectrum) in third.

Race 2

Kobi Williams (#94 ACMF Finance Spectrum) converted his pole position start into his second win of the weekend amid the changeable conditions in Sunday’s Race 2. Just 0.07seconds separated Williams from the #69 of Synergy Motorsport, Allotrac & CMR Motorsport Aus Spectrum of Cody Maynes-Rutty who gave it everything throughout the 20-minute session, swapping places with Williams for control of the race a number of times. Liam Loiacono (#43 BF Racing Mygale) also made a number of attempts to take the race lead from Williams, but a late race trip through the gravel at Sibera would see him ultimately cross the line in third.

Race 2 began with sunny but wet conditions when Williams got the jump off the line ahead of Loiacono and Lachlan Evennett (#88 BF Racing-ottostyle Mygale), who was quickly relegated back to fourth position coming into turn one Maynes-Rutty.

While the lead pack jostled for position throughout the race, big moves were happening further down the field.

All eyes were on Eddie Beswick (#30 Synergy Motorsport Spectrum), who started the race in 14th and quickly made up six positions to finish the race in eighth on the grid behind Vic State racer Bailey Collins. Beswick needed to finish seventh or higher to wrap up the championship in Race 2, and with the state racers running their own championship points this weekend, Beswick was effectively seventh in the national category, just enough to seal the deal by the tiniest margin of 21 points.

Meanwhile, Sellers meticulously made his way through the field, driving from 11th to fourth. Fraser Hie (#11 Fraser Hie Motorsport Spectrum) rounded out the top five.

The 2024 John Blanchard Perpetual Trophy winner, Jack Bussey (#74 Ag Equip Spectrum), crossed the line in sixth, ahead of Victorian State Championship racer Bailey Collins (#96 Spectrum) in seventh, Beswick in eighth, Joe Fawcett (#23 Konstrukt Spectrum) in ninth, and Daniel Frougas (#27 CHE Racing Team Mygale) in 10th.

Race 3

Picking up where they left off in Race 2, Williams got the inside line into turn one, fending off an attacking Maynes-Rutty who was attempting a move on the outside with Loiacono in third before running three-wide at the Hayshed. The racers did well in navigating oil on the track at the last two corners left from an incident in the previous category’s race.

Williams, Maynes-Rutty, and Loiacono continued the close racing for another two laps before a charging Bussey took the field four-wide as they crossed the control line for the third time. Just moments later, the momentum would come to a halt when a tangle between Evennett and Fawcett caused the first and only Safety Car of the day.

With both the #88 and #23 deeply embedded in the gravel and needing recovery, the race finished under Safety Car conditions, with Bussey reaping the rewards of his earlier dive to take the Race 3 win, and third for the round. Williams was second across the line, securing the Round 7 win, while Loiacono also made the most of his time on track today, rounding out the race three podium and claiming second for the round.

2024 Australian Formula Formula Ford Series Championship - Trico Phillip Island Quoteboard

Championship winner: Eddie Beswick, #30 Synergy Motorsport Spectrum

“I’d like to thank my family, my grandparents, my mum, dad, and sister for their support to be able to race and have a real crack at things. A massive thanks to Justin; I wasn’t much of a go-karter – I’ve got the national champion in go-karting next to me – so everything is a result of his teaching and I’m looking forward to continuing that in the future.

“Iccy, thanks for running the series, and to all the competitors this year. To win a national championship with only three race wins was so difficult and kept me on my toes all year.”

Championship second place-getter: Kobi Williams #94 ACMF Finance Spectrum

“A big thanks to my parents, Sparkles and my dad, for working on the car all year. Also, thank you to my sponsors, ACMF Finance and Sic Lids, and to everyone for racing hard; it’s been a great year. Congratulations to Eddie and Synergy Motorsport on their wins this year and thanks for a great season.”

Championship third place-getter: Jack Bussey #74 Ag Equip Spectrum

“It’s been a pretty cool year, and I’m pretty thrilled to be a part of it. Thank you to Iccy and everyone who makes this series happen. Thank you Ag Equip, William Adams, and Brown Property Group, without them I wouldn’t be here.”
